| Q. |
Why Delimit, why not MS
Excel? |
| A. |
MS Excel has many features that are not
available in Delimit; however there are some useful
features that Delimit has over Excel: |
| |
1. Delimit is able to open much larger files: |
| |
| |
Excel
2003 |
Delimit
1.2 |
| Max columns |
256 |
2 million |
| Max rows |
65536 |
2 billion |
|
| |
2. Delimit is able to open files much faster
than Excel, and once files are indexed opening even
the largest of files is instantaneous. |
| |
3. Delimit is able to automatically parse
delimited files with user defined parsing rules that
are configurable through settings. |
| |
4. Delimit makes it easy to extract any part of
a tabular file, split up large tabular files into
smaller ones or to join smaller tabular files into
larger ones. |
| |
|
|
| Q. |
Why Delimit, why not MS
Access or some other database? |
| A. |
If you have large amounts of tabular data and if
you need full control over it, databases are a good
way to go. However, it typically takes more time and
even more knowledge to achieve the same things in a
database compared to Delimit. If you just want to
open a tabular data file, search for something,
extract parts of it or split it up; it's much faster
and easier with Delimit. |

| Q. |
Why is there a delay
sometimes when requesting to save a file? Some of the functionality is
disabled during that period too. |
| A. |
There are a number of operations Delimit does in
the "background", while allowing you to still
work in the foreground.
File saving is one of these background operations. If the file
is large enough the operation will take some time to complete. This may be perceived as a delay
but in fact Delimit is working hard in the background
to save the file. During this period some of the
more advanced features are disabled for the same file
in order to avoid conflicts. |
| |
One way to know if a background operation is
running is to monitor the progress indicator. The
progress indicator is located on the status bar on
the far right. The indicator shows the progress of
the operation in total percent completed. Once the
background operation completes the indicator turns
blank. |
| |
Example: |
| |
 |
| |
The following list of operations are considered as "background":
File indexing, file saving, file searching, file
extracting/exporting, file splitting and file
joining. |
